Rincón de la Victoria, the beach a stone's throw from Málaga

Rincón de la Victoria

Rincón de la Victoria is the beach town immediately east of Málaga, and that position shapes everything. You get wide, calm beaches with an atmosphere that is Spanish through and through, and at the same time you are in the centre of Málaga within a quarter of an hour. For families, and for anyone who wants to combine city and coast without a long drive every day, this is one of the most practical spots on the whole coast.

It is not a town that dresses itself up. Plenty of Malagueños live here year round, which keeps things alive well outside the season. Shops stay open all year, the bars keep going, and in winter you walk the promenade in shirtsleeves.

Beaches and promenade

The beaches are long and wide, with an easygoing promenade full of terraces and chiringuitos. The water shelves gently, there is space to spare, and even in August you will still find a spot. Along the shore you get the classic Costa del Sol at its best: espetos over the wood fire, fried fish, and a bustle that never becomes overwhelming.

The promenade runs for several kilometres and links the different parts of the municipality, including La Cala del Moral and Rincón itself. It makes a pleasant route to walk or cycle, sea on one side and terraces on the other.

The surrounding area

East of the town lie the cliffs of the Cantal, where the old railway tunnels are now used as a walking and cycling route along the coast. It is a short, lovely stretch with sea views and a couple of hidden coves along the way.

Inland the Axarquía starts almost immediately, with vineyards, olive groves and white villages such as Macharaviaya and Comares, which sits on its mountain top like an eagle's nest. And because Málaga is so close, the museums, the historic centre, the port and the airport are all within easy reach. That puts Rincón de la Victoria right at the meeting point of city, beach and back country.

Practical matters

This is one of the few places on this coast where you can manage perfectly well without a car. Buses to Málaga run regularly, and within the town everything is walkable. To explore the wider area a car is of course more comfortable.

Sights and tips

The best known sight is the Cueva del Tesoro, the Cave of the Treasure, one of the few caves in Europe formed partly by the sea. The name comes from persistent stories of hidden Moorish gold, and the visit is short but memorable, especially with children. Walk the route along the cliffs and tunnels of the Cantal as well, preferably in the late afternoon.

Otherwise, use the town as a base for a day in Málaga: take the bus or park on the edge of the city, and keep an afternoon free for the beach. For a trip inland Comares is well worth it, though the road up is winding. Being so close to the city keeps Rincón lively all year, which makes it a good choice outside high season too.

If you want to explore the white villages of the Axarquía or the coast towards Nerja, your own car saves a great deal of time. We arrange one for the whole of your stay, ready when you arrive. The terms are on our page about car hire.
