Moclinejo is one of those small white villages in the hills behind Málaga that you could easily drive past, and that is precisely what makes it special. It lies in the wine country of the Axarquía, surrounded by terraces of vines climbing the slopes. Life here revolves around the wine, the quiet and the view, with the coast and the city of Málaga close by all the same.
Living among the vineyards
The village itself is small and easy to take in, with narrow streets, white walls and a friendly little square by the church. The surroundings are defined by the vineyards, where the grapes for the celebrated sweet moscatel are grown and dried into raisins. In the local bars you taste that wine as it is meant to be served, with something simple to eat alongside. This is a place to slow down and experience the real, rural Andalusia.
The rhythm of the year is the rhythm of the vines. In late summer the terraces are busy with the harvest, and the drying beds where the grapes turn to raisins appear on the slopes around the village. It is a way of working the land that has barely changed, and seeing it up close is one of the quiet pleasures of staying here.

The surrounding area
For all the calm, Moclinejo is not far from anywhere. Málaga with its museums, port and city beach is just under half an hour away, and the coast at Rincón de la Victoria is reached just as quickly. The rest of the Axarquía, with Vélez-Málaga and the white mountain villages, is within easy reach too. Anyone who enjoys walking will find plenty of paths in the surrounding hills with wide open views.
The roads up here are narrow and winding, which is part of the appeal. Almost every drive out of the village turns into a small excursion, with a view worth stopping for around one of the bends.
The neighbouring villages are close enough to string together in a single morning. Almáchar and El Borge, both known for their raisins, sit within a few kilometres, and the road between them runs high along the slopes with the valley falling away on one side. It is the kind of drive where you set out for half an hour and come back three hours later.
Food and daily life
Eating here is simple and honest: stews, grilled meat, local olive oil and whatever the kitchen has that day. The village has the basics you need, and for a bigger shop you drive down towards the coast or to Vélez-Málaga. That is very much part of the deal in a village this size, and most guests find it a small price for the quiet that comes with it.

Sights and tips
The greatest charm of Moclinejo is the village itself and the landscape around it. Come in autumn, when the grape harvest is celebrated with a village festival and the new must flows freely. The hamlet of El Valdés nearby is worth a visit, and the vineyards are lovely to drive or walk through. Taste the local sweet wine, enjoy the quiet, and use the village as a base for the area and the city.
Spring and autumn are the pleasantest times to be out on the paths; midsummer inland is hot, though the evenings at this height cool down nicely.
Because the village is small and rural, a car is useful here for shopping and for days out. We are happy to arrange one for you. Have a look at our page about car hire.
