Almost everyone driving towards Viñuela for the first time has the same moment. You leave the coast road behind, climb a few kilometres inland, and suddenly there it is: a wide blue lake between green hills, with the jagged ridge of the Sierra Tejeda behind it. That contrast of water, mountains and olive groves is exactly why people come. Viñuela is the inland Axarquía at its best, and you can still have your feet in the sea within twenty minutes.

A village that keeps its own pace
Viñuela itself is small. A church, a handful of shops, a few bars where the coffee is strong and the bill stays low. Spend a week here and by Thursday you know the baker and the man in the greengrocer's. It is not a village that has dressed itself up for visitors, and that is precisely what makes it pleasant. Life follows the seasons: the almond trees turn white in February, the avocados and mangoes are picked in late summer, and in winter the tractors go back and forth for the olive harvest.
There are plenty of places around the lake to fill a day without a plan. A bench with a view, a path along the shore, a terrace where you can watch the hills change colour as the afternoon wears on. Guests who rent a holiday home here often notice that after two days they barely look at their watch.
Walking, cycling and the water
The La Viñuela reservoir is the largest in the province of Málaga and shapes everything around it. Paths run along the shoreline that suit a gentle morning walk, and for anyone who wants a proper climb the real work starts right behind the village. The Sierra Tejeda lies immediately to the north, with routes that come out at points where you take in the lake, the coast and, on a clear day, even the mountains of Morocco.
Cyclists find narrow lanes winding through the groves here, with little traffic and plenty of climbing. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for both: warm enough, green, and with the kind of light that makes photographers happy.

Where you are in relation to everything else
The location may well be Viñuela's strongest card. Alcaucín and Canillas de Aceituno, two of the loveliest white villages in the area, are less than fifteen minutes away. Vélez-Málaga, the administrative and commercial heart of the Axarquía, is about the same, and you reach the beaches at Torre del Mar in roughly twenty minutes. Málaga is three quarters of an hour, Granada and the Alhambra a little over an hour and a half. You can fill a week from here without ever driving the same route twice.

Food and drink
Inland cooking is hearty and honest. Think dishes with goat, known here as chivo, soups built on almonds, and the local sausage. In the bars of the surrounding villages a beer still tends to arrive with something to eat alongside it. Anyone who takes olive oil seriously should buy a bottle straight from a mill in this area: the difference from the supermarket shelf is surprisingly large.
Sights and tips
The lake is the main draw, and it rewards visits at different times of day. Early in the morning the water lies perfectly still; towards sunset the hills on the far side turn orange. In spring the almond blossom is reason enough to come on its own. Combine your stay with a drive through the neighbouring villages, because the road here is often as good as the destination. Visit one of the weekly village markets if you can, where the vegetables come from the same hills as the view. Come outside July and August if possible: the interior gets properly hot then, while May, June, September and October are almost always right.
The back country only really opens up if you have your own car. The best spots sit just that bit further than you would want to walk, and public transport is thin on the ground. We make sure a car is waiting when you arrive, so you can set off straight away. All the details are on our page about car hire.
