Torre del Mar, the beach of the Axarquía

Toore Del Mar aan de costa del sol

Torre del Mar is where the Axarquía runs down to the sea, and there is nothing manufactured about it. This is where Spanish families from the surrounding area spend their Sunday afternoons: on the sand, on the promenade, at a table with too many dishes on it. There is no wall of high rise and no resort atmosphere. What you get instead is a lively coastal town with a wide sandy beach, a promenade that runs for kilometres and a centre where you do everything on foot.

Everything within walking distance

The promenade is Torre del Mar's pride and one of the longest on this stretch of coast. You walk past palm trees, playgrounds, beach bars and terraces, on a route used by runners early in the morning and by half the town in the evening. The beach is wide and shelves gently, which makes it a firm favourite with families who have small children.

The centre has shops for everyday groceries, pharmacies, a weekly market and a long list of restaurants. Rent an apartment or holiday home here and you can get through a week without touching the car, which on this coast is far from a given.

Eating by the sea

The food is why many guests keep coming back. The fish comes off the boats you see putting in at Caleta de Vélez, and the best known speciality is the espeto: sardines threaded onto a cane and grilled over a wood fire in an old fishing boat filled with sand. It sounds simple and it is, but done well it is one of the best things you will eat on this coast. Fried fish, prawns and grilled squid are the other constants.

A base for the whole area

Torre del Mar sits centrally in the Axarquía, which is useful. Vélez-Málaga and its historic centre are close by. The white mountain villages inland, Cómpeta, Frigiliana and Canillas de Aceituno among them, are between half an hour and forty five minutes away. Nerja is a little over twenty minutes, Málaga with its museums and airport around three quarters of an hour. If you want to spend the morning in the mountains and the afternoon on the beach, you can do that from here without any effort.

There is also a good cycle path along the coast, running towards Caleta de Vélez and beyond. For anyone who likes to move without getting in the car, that is a welcome extra.

Sights and tips

The promenade and the beach are the beating heart, with the old lighthouse as the landmark and meeting point. Walk through the weekly market once for the atmosphere and the prices, and in summer keep an eye on the events calendar, because there is regularly music and festivity on and around the promenade. For half a day of culture, drive to the old centre of Vélez-Málaga and its castle. And do try the espeto, ideally around two in the afternoon, when the fires are burning on the sand and the tables are still calm. Outside high season Torre del Mar is at its most pleasant: mild weather, space on the beach and a centre that stays lively all the same.

Within the town itself you do not need a car. If you want to take in the mountain villages, the Nerja caves or Málaga, having your own car is far easier than waiting for the bus. We arrange it in advance, timed to your arrival. Have a look at the options on our page about car hire.
